Beware of fake anti-virus software

Scareware has been around for a while now, but recent media reports of fake anti-virus is a timely reminder of the problem. In summary a user will see a pop-up that advises they have a virus and they need to purchase anti-virus software to resolve. The user does this (although the product is a fake) and pays by credit card, the details for which may get sold onto criminals.

The three problems of pop-ups, fake anti-virus, and identity fraud can be tackled by having a network managed anti-virus product, a pop up blocker and always checking with your IT support company (amicitia) before buying products from the Internet.
